<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
As evidenced from an earlier <a href="http://bestofroad.blogspot.com/2014/05/raleigh-state-farmers-market.html" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: blue;">post</span></b></a><span style="color: blue;"><b>:</b></span> I love farmer's markets.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There's a palpable energy there, from the convergence of shoppers and vendors. Regional farmers and artisan food-makers. Crafters and musicians. Dogs and baby strollers.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sometimes dogs IN baby strollers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But most of all, I love the treasure trove of edible goods that can be discovered all in one location on a weekend morning. I live for the joy of filling my grocery bag with locally grown vegetables, small-batch peanut butter and hand bottled pasta sauce. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Local goat cheese sample? Pass the crackers. Hot pepper jelly? I'll take a small jar. Vegan cheese spread? Sounds oxymoronic, but what they hey!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Unfortunately, here's the all too common problem I run into with my farmer's market patronage: actually getting myself to market to buy these great things. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Most markets in the area are only open for a few hours on Saturday mornings. So if I'm not in town or can't carve out time in my Saturday morning schedule (may or may not correlate to Friday evening activities...) I miss out on a weeks worth of local food enjoyment. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sad face.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
BUT, a fortunate encounter at Raleigh HQ on <a href="http://bestofroad.blogspot.com/2014/12/first-friday-in-raleigh.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;"><b>First Friday</b></span></a> revealed a brilliant solution to this problem: Relay Foods.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Imagine with me for a second: an online marketplace where you can browse food by category (fruit, vegetable, bakery, dessert, meat, etc.) add and remove items from your virtual cart, select your pick up day, time and location and pay for your order. All from the living room couch (potentially in your fuzzy bunny pajamas).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZPASpcJV-2E-_u5z_BJ7XBTS-0wfMxwaDWTH6rHuxYbXrr2D4hNKqwZ8mdgUY955raxq6a-N6f4yFlA9G887XwgHsvh3SwZl8iyaNa9P3tG0QuaaJp98zdxl6t3OnrQjCe2K_M0mRrNA/s1600/IMG_2892.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZPASpcJV-2E-_u5z_BJ7XBTS-0wfMxwaDWTH6rHuxYbXrr2D4hNKqwZ8mdgUY955raxq6a-N6f4yFlA9G887XwgHsvh3SwZl8iyaNa9P3tG0QuaaJp98zdxl6t3OnrQjCe2K_M0mRrNA/s1600/IMG_2892.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6xI1-y0lZvT_QBOTdTlI21VA20N9hxllRyibi0S9GmQfyd6jqzy-D5yXVVhakqEX2Cai_bzaUzDOHFx8p0bQ9_AVphrFMd_jJfBjYNM8t7MPtx6geDUEnuSG1hso8LJRhDZtkkxID6Yk/s1600/RelayFoodsSample.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6xI1-y0lZvT_QBOTdTlI21VA20N9hxllRyibi0S9GmQfyd6jqzy-D5yXVVhakqEX2Cai_bzaUzDOHFx8p0bQ9_AVphrFMd_jJfBjYNM8t7MPtx6geDUEnuSG1hso8LJRhDZtkkxID6Yk/s1600/RelayFoodsSample.jpg" height="604" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQx7fil_0QHiAO-LFo2jgeuqqL3hFUhA94-_X77LcfkolXyQU0XUWXeP3PxKrGb966Kkl8bD14vxc0k9UMWU_NKYCN-o_hkxQJ6MxPcsZu1rA4KOwwyjFI7-Eb9vlWevUTLpwkwb0bYjM/s1600/RelayFoodsOrder_1223.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQx7fil_0QHiAO-LFo2jgeuqqL3hFUhA94-_X77LcfkolXyQU0XUWXeP3PxKrGb966Kkl8bD14vxc0k9UMWU_NKYCN-o_hkxQJ6MxPcsZu1rA4KOwwyjFI7-Eb9vlWevUTLpwkwb0bYjM/s1600/RelayFoodsOrder_1223.jpg" height="640" width="462" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well that's exactly the service that Relay Foods is looking to provide, but with a deliberate focus on supporting a local food community by connecting shoppers with quality, healthy and sustainable foods.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They offer locally farmed produce, milk, cheese and meats, as well as other Triangle area food items including: <a href="http://www.cackalacky.com/" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: blue;">Cackalacky</span></b></a> Spice Sauce, <a href="http://bigspoonroasters.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;"><b>Big Spoon Roasters</b></span></a> nut butter, and <a href="http://www.nellositaly.com/" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: blue;">Nello's</span></b></a> Pasta sauce. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This means my farmer's market bounty can be assembled, bagged and waiting for pickup after work on a Tuesday evening.<br />
<br />
With a huge smile on my face.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Relay is new to the Triangle (since the end of June 2014) but traces its <a href="http://www.c-ville.com/zach-buckner-thinks-relay-foods-online-grocery-model-is-ready-for-that-national-stage/#.VJ3AT64Bw" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: blue;">history as a startup</span></b></a> back to 2010 in Charlottesville, VA. As of now, there are 24 different North Carolina producers selling their products on Relay Foods, with that number to grow as business does in the area. Pickup locations (14 in all) are spread throughout Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, with home delivery also available for a higher fee.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After learning about them, naturally I had to give Relay the ol' college try. I browsed the website for some enticing NC products (Nello's Hot Pepper Pasta Sauce and Chapel Hill Creamery's Calavander aged cheese are a match made in heaven) along with regional flair from north of the state line (Bombolini spinach fettuccine out of Richmond, VA: you look great sitting in my cart). Add in some organic broccoli for a dose of greenery, choose my pickup location and payment method, and just like that my order was ready. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That Tuesday, on my way home from work, I stopped by <a href="http://bestofroad.blogspot.com/2014/04/sams-bottle-shop.html" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: blue;">Sam's Bottle Shop</span></b></a> in Durham to collect my edible bounty. I gave my name to the friendly Relay employee manning the delivery truck, she gathered all my items, paper bagged them and I was on my way.<br />
<br />
Farmers Market: if you're reading this, don't be jealous. Nobody's taking me away from your Saturday morning goodness.<br />
<br />
But there's no question Relay Foods will expand my appreciation and ability for local food buying and eating.<br />
<br />
What's not to love about that?</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I would say like most breakfast-loving Durhamites, I had a love/hate reaction to the announcement that Monuts was temporarily closing while they moved from their original Parrish Street location to a <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/Monuts+Donuts/@36.013911,-78.921436,15z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0xd9bcbf185a302517" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: blue;">new spot down on Ninth street</span></b></a>.<br />
<br />
I loved that the former doughnut cart had done so well in its first brick and mortar, it was able to spread its glazed, sesame sprinkled wings into a bigger space.<br />
<br />
I hated that I'd be without their donuts for several weeks.<br />
<br />
I loved that the new digs were breathing life into the former <a href="http://www.newsobserver.com/2012/05/02/2038220_durhams-magnolia-grill-closing.html?rh=1" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: blue;">Magnolia Grill</span></b></a> building, conjuring up delicious memories of a trendsetter in the now vibrant fine-dining scene in Durham.<br />
<br />
I hated that I'd be without their donuts.<br />
<br />
I loved the teasers they were dropping on social media of an expanded menu, with new offerings for breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktail hour.<br />
<br />
I hated... OK this is making me sound a bit doughnut obsessive.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9sWt1Ny0cdjgv8kZBTLd-VPtRodqKeeNwJ1oEzRi9vM-5jegR-oKPKbIxir6BB5V8jDzoBMltNiZCEUttefhD8cmVBWMxeiPGM_ltqGL0A3h2lgNOhCEhqkxivUv8L_Gore_NSBTI3xw/s1600/Monuts_Bar.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9sWt1Ny0cdjgv8kZBTLd-VPtRodqKeeNwJ1oEzRi9vM-5jegR-oKPKbIxir6BB5V8jDzoBMltNiZCEUttefhD8cmVBWMxeiPGM_ltqGL0A3h2lgNOhCEhqkxivUv8L_Gore_NSBTI3xw/s1600/Monuts_Bar.jpg" height="332" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But no sooner than I began to wallow in my own doughnut-less self pity, Monuts opened their newly polished doors for business: bigger and better than ever.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The difference in size between old and new is immediately evident. But while the Parrish Street storefront was short on standing space and seating capacity, the exposed brick walls and massive street-front window gave the spot a charmingly cozy feel that I feared would be lost in a square footage upgrade. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My stop in for breakfast on opening week proved this worry to be misguided. Monuts has taken full advantage of the added space, while keeping alive the intimate community feel from their first storefront. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
String lights line the walls and ceiling. Large wooden booths, communal table and expansive bar invite hungry patrons to grab a seat and stay awhile. Donut-themed art and Children's book prints adorn the walls, while tiny plants and funky-fine china line the window sills. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But what had me giddier than a 5 year old hopped up on an extra large chocolate glazed with sprinkles? The <span style="color: blue;"><a href="http://www.monutsdonuts.com/menu.html" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: blue;">new Monuts menu</span></b></a>. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, in addition to the ever-changing donut selection and create-your-own bagel sandwich options, there's biscuits, there's salads, there's full plate entrees, there's daily soups, there's cocktails, there's draft beer. Doors are open 7 AM - 9 PM, and the first few weekends have even featured some awesome looking <b><a href="https://twitter.com/MonutsDonuts/status/544139794113384448" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">brunch specials</span></a></b>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The expanded staff have had their hands full with the restaurant's early popularity (there's been a steady line stretched by the bar every time I've been in), but it moves quickly and all employees are just as friendly and welcoming as they were back on Parrish street (pro tip: if the line up front is too daunting, you can order food at the bar too. Go ahead and get a beer while you're at it...)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Welcome to my new obsession.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

Buehler...? Buehler...?<br />
<br />
I don't think there's any relation to Ferris, but that doesn't mean the <a href="http://www.visitnc.com/listing/al-buehler-cross-country-trail" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Al Buehler Cross Country trail</span></a> in Durham isn't a great way to spend a day off.<br />
<br />
Probably my favorite place for cardio (of all kinds!) in the Bull City, this gravel route has it going on.<br />

<br />
The three mile loop around the Washington Duke Inn and Golf Course features: scenic views of golf holes and pond, excellent forested tree cover (for shade in the summer, rain canopy in the spring), and plenty of friendly folks to encounter along the way (dog walkers, stroller walkers, bikers, joggers, Duke Divinity students pondering the inner workings of modern religion...)<br />
<br />
The course is moderately hilly (including one MASSIVE hill about halfway through. Just remember: hills build character), and the total distance is great for 5K training or just getting out in nature for a bit.<br />
<br />
If you're looking to take this trail for a spin, there's <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/Al+Buehler+Trail,+Durham,+NC+27705/@35.9949364,-78.9496588,17z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x89ace6ea64e28ef5:0xb70bec766af42f9e" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">parking off Cameron Blvd</span></a>.<br />

Oh beautiful Friday.<br />
<br />
The most anticipated day of the work week gets even better the first week of every month. That's because downtown Raleigh's cultural and artistic hot-spots are teeming with free food samples, local craft vendors, wine, beer and live music.<br />
<br />

To me, nothing says "You're worth more than a gift card from the check-out line at Wal-Mart" better than merch from a local business.<br />

Luckily for Triangle residents, there are PLENTY of fine independent establishments at which to do your holiday shopping. And three of those great places are located side by side by side on <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/Wine+Authorities/@35.790407,-78.634904,15z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0xbec2cff0b014ac57?sa=X&ei=lZZ8VPjUJqW1sQTw24GAAg&ved=0CH8Q_BIwCg" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">East Franklin Street in Raleigh</span></a>.<br />

<b>For the Foodie:</b><br />
<br />
Shopping for the tastebuds of that special someone?<span style="color: blue;"> <a href="http://www.wineauthorities.com/" target="_blank">Wine Authorities</a> </span>has you covered. They focus on stocking estate grown wines from different regions around the world (estate: meaning a family-owned winery that grows all the grapes that go into the final product).<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>Wine Authorities focus is on wine drinkers, not wine collectors, as all their bottles are priced under $50. The staff are like your personal wine gurus: extremely friendly and knowledgeable, just itching to help you find the perfect wine for any occasion or palate.<br />
<br />
They also have an entire section of locally made food products, including cheeses from <a href="http://chapelhillcreamery.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Chapel Hill Creamery</span></a>, crackers and granola from <a href="http://www.piefantasy.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Scratch</span></a> bakery and peanut butter from <a href="http://bigspoonroasters.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Big Spoon Roasters</span></a>.<br />
<br />
But I haven't even mentioned the best part: their enomatic machine allows you to sample while you shop. Just put some dough on a pre-paid card, find the wine you want to try, pick your pour size and enjoy. Holiday shopping just got a lot more fun...<br />

<a href="http://edgeofurge.com/pages/about-us" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Edge of Urge</span></a> is the brainchild of Jessie Williams, who moved from Chicago to open the flagship Wilmington store in 2002. Now with a second location recently christened in Raleigh, the shop is a go-to spot for unique women's apparel, greeting cards and home goods, Edge of Urge has no shortage of creative, funky and eye catching goodies in stock. You'll probably laugh out loud more than once shifting through a hilarious sympathy card or sarcastic T-shirt print. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I discovered <a href="http://www.luminaclothing.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Lumina Clothing Co.</span></a> at the old Martin St. location in downtown Raleigh, and immediately fell in love with their commitment to high quality, American made (and NC designed) men's wear.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What started out as hobby of making neckties, the store's inventory has now expanded to include button downs, trousers and a host of other finely crafted manly gear. The broad range of men's clothes and accessories that Lumina offers really can't be beat. The Trendy Hipster drinking craft beer at Raleigh Times, the avid Outdoors-man mucking through trails around Umstead State park and the immaculately groomed Business Professional strutting down Fayetteville Street can all find that perfect something perusing the Lumina shelves.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Holiday shopping can be a nightmare: traffic jams around crowded malls, listening to endless loops of pop-y Christmas music and being systematically ignored by distracted department store workers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As great as that sounds, why not actually enjoy your shopping experience? Sip on some wine, sample some cheese, interact with friendly store owners, all while supporting local business and crossing name after name off your holiday list. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now that's something to be thankful for.</div>

The recent influx of young entrepreneurs, artistic expression, and community-focused development in the past few years is sprouting a seemingly endless supply of Raleigh spots worth exploring.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last week, I was fortunate enough to take an entire day perusing the city (accompanied by an extremely patient girlfriend), and got to check off a few things that had been on my Raleigh to-do list for quite a while.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's how the day unfolded:</div>

First stop was the North Carolina Art Museum's sprawling outdoor art walk: <a href="http://www.ncartmuseum.org/museum_park/art_in_the_park/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Art in the Park.</span></a> </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
NCMA commissions artists to create pieces that are interlaced with the natural surroundings, stretching across 30 acres of land between Blue Ridge Road, Wade Ave and 440. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Varying in size, scale and subject matter, the Art Park exhibits sparked some great ideas and conversation, while we tried to decipher the artist's message about society and our current role interacting with nature. There were also some cool old chairs hanging out in trees.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We wandered through the Art Park trails, back up towards the NCMA main buildings, and came across the <a href="http://ncartmuseum.org/collection/rodin/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Rodin Sculpture Garden</span></a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While only slightly familiar with Rodin's work before this visit, it was hard not to become fixated by the powerful detail and realism of each sculpture. The surrounding plants and central tidal pool only enhance an atmosphere that is just calling out for quiet reflection. These three dudes agree:</div>

Now with all that walking around and deep artistic ponderings, we were ready to grub.<br />
<br />
Luckily for us, the next stops on the itinerary were two incredible Raleigh eateries that epitomize the city's newest trend: local entrepreneurs serving the community through some darn good eats.<br />
<br />
Happy and Hale has been calling my name ever since they expanded from an order-only delivery system to their City Plaza location a few months back. Founded by two NC State grads who started the company with only a tricycle and a website made over night, the brick and mortar location has quickly become the go-to spot for Raleigh-ites needing a veggie fix.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGUf_5T1PyxtEyDikT_UsIOkYnmacfNfDt-THZCLnd-AxoNT_SbnuuFdZPayrbUWUvcg1bj9U1-jib5x81VSTwjyOCGDJlmwDyayGIs6tuhbE5LH_qQVJjmYUvz0iS3xw6Pmthg1LG7-4/s1600/IMG_2668.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGUf_5T1PyxtEyDikT_UsIOkYnmacfNfDt-THZCLnd-AxoNT_SbnuuFdZPayrbUWUvcg1bj9U1-jib5x81VSTwjyOCGDJlmwDyayGIs6tuhbE5LH_qQVJjmYUvz0iS3xw6Pmthg1LG7-4/s1600/IMG_2668.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Happy+Hale delivery bike can get some rest,<br />
now that the City Plaza location is open</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That's because<span style="color: blue;"> <a href="http://www.happyandhale.com/#mission" target="_blank">Happy+Hale</a> </span>specializes in salads and juices made from fresh, wholesome ingredients. And these aren't the kind of salads that make you wish you weren't eating a salad. Smokey grilled meats, roasted veggies, tangy cheeses and homemade dressings make these salads taste as good as they are for your body. Check out <a href="http://www.happyandhale.com/#shop" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">the menu</span></a>, and feel those lettuce cravings slowly creep over you.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And since we got our dose of greenery in at lunch, a treat for the sweet tooth was in order. Oh there's a chocolate factory right down the street? How convenient...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Videri Chocolate Factory on West Davie is a bean-to-bar chocolate operation started by <a href="https://viderichocolatefactory.com/about-videri" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">three die-hard chocolate lovers</span></a>, that turns fair-trade organic cocoa beans into deliciously crafted chocolate bars and treats. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Visit the factory building, a former Raleigh train depot, and you can nibble a chocolate bar or sip on the hot variety from the full coffee bar. The self guided tour can't be missed either. Read about Videri's beginnings, <a href="https://viderichocolatefactory.com/chocolate-making" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">their chocolate making process</span></a>, and admire local and national praise for their great chocolate products.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Not only was this a fun day trekking around Raleigh, but it gave me a renewed appreciation for just how much growth the city is seeing: infrastructure, ideas, creativity and local businesses. When I take a look back and think about it, it's hard not to be inspired by all the examples of innovation and newness that Raleigh has to offer. </div>
<br />

"How do you guys add a local egg to pizza?" a customer in front of me asked at the Pie Pushers trailer window. "Basically we fry an egg and stick it right on top of the slice, it's pretty great."<br />

I would wholeheartedly agree.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Creativity with sauces, cheese and toppings is what makes Pie Pushers stand out in the Triangle pizza scene, (which boasts some pretty <a href="http://bestofroad.blogspot.com/2014/09/monday-boozin-on-cheap-lillys-pizza-in.html" target="_blank">spectacular pizza joints</a>). Homemade corn mix with spicy chorizo on a Mexican slice, the German flair of local bratwurst and cabbage with mustard, even a Cubano slice with pulled pork and pickles have all appeared scribbled across their dry erase menu board.<br />
<br />
Some of my all time-favorite slices (pictured above) include <b>the Breakfast Slice</b>: Bacon, sausage, potatoes, onions, topped with egg, the <b>State of Nirvana: </b>with spinach, grilled chicken, caramelized onions and blue cheese, and <b>The Skillet: </b>pesto, potato, artichoke hearts, broccoli, feta.<br />
<br />
But it's not only the imaginative taste (and name) combinations that makes Pie Pushers worth hunting down, it's also their commitment to using local, seasonal ingredients wherever possible. Meats, vegetables and cheeses can often be traced back to <span style="color: blue;"><a href="http://piepushers.com/category/our-farmers/" target="_blank">an origin in or around the Triangle, </a></span><br />
<br />
Also, at any given time, their menu includes chicken wings, garlic knots, calzones, side salad, and even biscuit sandwiches (a breakfast-time treat only). Whole pizzas of the daily specials, custom creations, and call ahead orders for pick up are also great options.<br />
<br />
If you're a pizza fan in Raleigh/Durham and haven't given Pie Pushers a try, follow them on <a href="https://twitter.com/piepushers" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Twitter</span></a>, <a href="http://instagram.com/piepushers" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Instagram</span> </a>or check out their <span style="color: blue;"><a href="http://piepushers.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">website</span></a> </span>to see where the trailer will be parked next.<br />

While Durham could be considered the bakery capital of the Triangle, Raleigh has a very promising newcomer that's risen onto the local bread landscape: Boulted Bread.<br />
<br />
Originally only available for pick-up orders or at farmers markets, Boulted Bread now has a storefront location serving up coffee, fresh pastries, and of course, bread.<br />
<br />
After reading this great <a href="http://www.indyweek.com/indyweek/trio-has-raleighs-boulted-bakery-on-steady-path/Content?oid=4205874" style="color: blue;" target="_blank">Indy article</a> about the trio who started the shop, I had to stop in and check out Boulted for myself. And what better time to visit a bakery than at breakfast?<br />

<br />
Walking into Boulted, your eye is immediately grabbed by the front display case, which is overflowing with croissants (plain, savory and sweet) breakfast breads and all manner of delicious looking baked goods.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>The majority of the store space is dedicated to the ovens and bakery gadgets in the back (including their own custom made <a href="http://www.boultedbread.com/#!mill/c2414" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">stone mill</span></a>, I mean how cool is that), but there are a few tables with seats to enjoy baked goods on site.<br />
<br />
I really loved all the natural light that was streaming into the store front. It was solid proof that breakfast is best enjoyed with a heavy dose of sunrise.<br />
<br />
And my oh my what a breakfast Boulted bakes up. I couldn't convince myself to order anything but the chocolate croissant, and it proved to be wise decision. Perfectly buttery and flakey, and filled with Escazu chocolate (another Raleigh original!), it was hands down one of the best croissants I've had in the Triangle.<br />
<br />
My girlfriend got the savory croissant, with prosciutto and gruyere cheese. Based on her review, and a sample bite by me, Boulted knocked this one out of the park too.<br />
<br />
I have yet to try a loaf of Boulted's bread but you can see all their loaf varieties, as well as their location and store hours, on their <a href="http://www.boultedbread.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">website</span></a>. No question that'll be my next purchase here.... after a few more croissants.jchitwoodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17803863285257961071noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-166679074090041153.post-29571880045831265312014-09-15T08:23:00.000-07:002014-09-20T09:41:21.984-07:00Monday Boozin' on the Cheap: Lilly's Pizza in Raleigh<script>

It was a happy accident that I found myself at Lilly's last Monday night (<a href="http://bestofroad.blogspot.com/2014/09/drinking-raleigh-beer-nicklepoint.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">after checking out a new brewery in Five Points</span></a>), but it lead to an amazing discovery:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lilly's has $2 drafts on Monday's. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Their pizza alone is good enough to cure even the worst case of the Monday's, but pair that with $2 beer and you might just forget how far away the weekend is.</div>

Being a Durham resident, I'm veryyy familiar with the Lilly's Pizza in Brightleaf Square, but had never been to the Raleigh iteration before this visit. While the Glenwood Lilly's is significantly smaller than it's sister restaurant in the Bull City, it makes up for its lack of size in edgy character.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
From the glowing beer signs, to the paper plate customer wall art, to the rap music blaring from the kitchen, Lilly's eclectic vibe makes for a spectacular non-traditional dining atmosphere.<br />
<br />
And most importantly: the pizza is top-notch.<br />
<br />
Organic ingredients and toppings ensure great quality in each slice, and their pizza dough may or may not make appearances in my dreams from time to time. Perfectly doughy, slightly chewy and sweet, its the ultimate bread vessel for whatever cheeses, veggies or meats top your circular creation.<br />
<br />
Monday's are just better with pizza and cheap beer, it's a scientific fact (based on my own independent research). But if you don't believe me, just let Lilly's do the convincing.</div>

Big shout out to <i>raleigh what's up?</i> on her <a href="http://raleighwhatsup.blogspot.com/2014/09/september-raleigh-list.html#.VA9qZPldX_M" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">great post</span></a> about new things to check out in Raleigh this month, which inspired me to pay a visit to the new kid on the Raleigh-beer-block: Nickelpoint Brewing Co.<br />

Although their taproom just opened in the <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/506+Pershing+Rd,+Raleigh,+NC+27608/@35.804402,-78.633663,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x89ac5f35fd07ebc7:0x96ca20bf6289be8b" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Five Points neighborhood</span></a>, according to their <a href="http://www.nickelpointbrewing.com/about.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">website</span></a> the brewery was founded in 2013.<br />
<br />
Nickelpoint focuses on traditional English Style beers, which was evident when I visited, as they had a Blonde Ale, English IPA and Porter on tap. There was also a higher ABV Double Barley Steak Cake Stout, which I almost had to order just on principal of the name being boss.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>My girlfriend got the Blonde Ale, I went with the English IPA. Both were a pleasure to drink: smooth and slightly creamy, and nicely flavored all the way through.<br />
<br />
The interior of the taproom is on the smaller side, but there are picnic tables outdoors in the parking lot (a steady rain kept us away from those). From what I've seen on Twitter/their website, food trucks may also become a feature on the weekends in the near future.<br />
<br />
Overall, Nickelpoint Brewing Co. is bringing good quality brew to the Five Points area, further strengthening the growing beer culture in Raleigh.jchitwoodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17803863285257961071noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-166679074090041153.post-73989266774752829052014-09-08T06:55:00.002-07:002014-09-18T05:11:22.666-07:00Free Sunday Yoga in Durham<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Leave it to Fullsteam, Durham's all purpose space for food truck gatherings, <a href="http://bestofroad.blogspot.com/2014/04/fullsteam-ahead.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">run club meet-ups</span></a>, cheesy movie screenings and various local shenanigans, to casually morph a brewery into a Sunday morning yoga studio.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've been on a bit of a yoga kick recently, <a href="http://bestofroad.blogspot.com/2014/08/free-yoga-and-not-free-but-tasty-hot.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">especially free sessions</span></a>, and decided to check out Flow Yoga at the Brewery. The class meets Sundays at 10 45 AM and is open to all experience levels (just be sure to bring your own mat).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
I am by no means an accomplished yogi, but still felt comfortable going through the different class poses, taking breaks or modifying positions when needed (especially when a girl nearby was going into full-on-body-pretzel mode).<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
An unexpected bonus to doing yoga in a brewery: the large warehouse atmosphere is surprisingly conducive to the meditative vibe that yoga is most effective in. The room is very open and spacious, slightly warm from the freshly bubbling brew, and the large overhead fan makes for soothing background noise.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Best of all, by the time I was all stretched out and feeling loosey goosey, the bar was just opening up to serve the first round of pints. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now that's the recipe for a relaxing Sunday.</div>

Two places in Durham to enjoy great beer on the cheap and celebrate the end of mid-week: <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/Motorco+Parts%26Labor/@36.003527,-78.900332,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x3c88db46a49b8474" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Motorco </span></a>and <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/preview?ie=UTF-8&fb=1&gl=us&sll=36.002173,-78.900249&sspn=0.026664,0.0439464&cid=15813326704567313367&q=Surf+Club&ei=_msIVJi2O7T-8AHe74HoBQ&ved=0CJ4BEPwSMAs" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Surf Club</span></a>.<br />

At one time in my life I considered these to be two vastly different entities.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Running is a form of exercise, improves heart and cardiovascular health, strengthens leg muscles, burns calories and can aide in weight loss.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Beer is a tasty beverage created via brewing and fermentation, is alcoholic, consuming it does the opposite of burn calories and can aide in the emergence of the 'beer belly'.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">But as I've grown to enjoy both beer and running separately, I see how they are actually pretty similar in a lot of ways. Both are used to de-stress and clear the mind, both are pretty healthy activities in moderation, both promote social interaction and spawn mini communities that come together specifically to enjoy their chosen interest as a group.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">I wrote an <a href="http://bestofroad.blogspot.com/2014/04/fullsteam-ahead.html" target="_blank">earlier post</a> about experiencing the running and beer loving communities overlap at Durham's Fullsteam Run Club. Recently I decided to check out another brewery-based running meetup, Raleigh's Big Boss Run Club.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">March through September the club meets at Big Boss Brewery on Tuesday nights, with the group run unofficially starting at </span><span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">7 PM. </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="color: #141823;"><span style="line-height: 15.359999656677246px;">On the run club Facebook page, there are maps for four official routes (3.1, 4, 5 or 6 miles) all using a nearby greenway and connecting neighborhood streets. </span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #141823;"><span style="line-height: 15.359999656677246px;"><br /></span></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #141823;"><span style="line-height: 15.359999656677246px;">I glanced at the maps beforehand, but pretty quickly forgot what turn went where once I was out on the road. Fortunately, using a pack of more experienced Big Boss runners as my guide, I successfully found my way out and back from the 5 mile loop. </span></span></span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 15.359999656677246px;">It was a scenic route, starting out along the greenway and looping through house-lined streets. My girlfriend, who took an alternate route, went mostly along the greenway/creek for her run, and said it was very pretty and peaceful.</span><br />

It was really no different from the conversations that would take place over a round of beers on any other night, except that everyone was a little sweatier.</span></span></span><br />

This is the quintessential example of what's great about running as a group and enjoying beer as a group. Meeting new people, staying in touch with ones you already know, and just generally engaging in local community businesses through enjoying a shared interest with others.</span></span></span><br />

Full Disclosure: I already have a pretty major obsession with farmers markets.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The co-mingling of people, produce, baked goods, homemade jellies/jams/pickles, dogs and babies on a sunny Saturday morning never fails to put me in a great mood that can last an entire weekend. But while I've made many trips to the Carborro and Durham markets, I had yet to experience what NC's capital city market had to offer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm happy to say I was not disappointed by my first visit there.</div>

Being in the thick of strawberry season, it seemed like no matter where you turned there was somebody offering up a free strawberry. And I wasn't saying no. Past the tables selling strawberries and veggies was the baked goods/speciality vendors area. This included a counter stacked with bread from La Farm Bakery in Cary, a table offering samples of different salsas, hummus and dips, as well as my favorite discovery of the day: the Cookie People. Seriously, how could Cookie People not be people you want to buy something from? After seeing the various selection of massive cookies (3 for $5!) the cash practically leapt out from my wallet. I got the chocolate chip, chocolate peanut butter cup, and plain peanut butter. All were spectacular.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another thing I love about farmers markets: eating at them. All that walking around and picking over fresh fruits and vegetables can work up quite the appetite. Rather than eat our weight in free strawberries, my girlfriend and I decided to wander across the street to the State Farmers Market Restaurant. This proved to be a great decision.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Just like the market, the restaurant is open 7 days a week and boasts a full menu of fresh, home-cooked meals that show off the seasonal bounty of the farmers who are selling just yards away. We were informed by our excellent waiter Phillip (who took a job there because one week he literally ate there everyday, and decided it only made sense to get an employee discount. You have to admire the logic) that weekends at the restaurant are busiest due to the increased number of vendors and shoppers visiting the market.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After glancing over the menu, there were so many things calling out to me. Do I get breakfast or lunch? Something where I can sample one of the ever changing seasonal side dishes? Go a la carte with a hodgepodge of everything that strikes my fancy? Such are the awesome dilemmas of the State Farmers Market Restaurant.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I ended up going with their fried chicken biscuit (there were also free biscuits brought out before the meal. I wanted more biscuit, so sue me) and a side of macaroni and cheese. Phillip informed me that the biscuit was about as big as your face, and Phillip doesn't lie. This thing was massive. Even better than staring at it in awe was biting into it, the flavors were incredible. The fried chicken was cooked perfectly, some of the best I've had in recent memory, and the biscuit was a soft and buttery thing of beauty.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The mac and cheese refused to play second fiddle. Warm, gooey and just the right amount of cheesy, I almost had to pinch myself between bites to see if I had somehow passed out and slipped into an amazing brunch daydream. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Our bellies full, we happily wandered back outside into the Saturday morning sunshine, grocery bags overflowing with fresh produce, bread and cookies. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I walked away fully validated in my love for farmers markets, and would highly recommend spending a weekend morning exploring the one that Raleigh has to offer.</div>

The pupusa blew my mind. Think of a quesadilla, but with all sides closed in on the cheesy goodness within. They also had versions with chicken or pork mixed with cheese. For those craving a little animal protein, I tried a bite of the chicken variety, courtesy of my girlfriend, and it was just as good.<br />
<br />
The corn tamale was another unique taste experience. The insides were stuffed with a sweet corn meal mixture, that reminded me of very dense cornbread. Very delicious indeed, but left me pretty thirsty...<br />
<br />
And what would going to a Mexican joint be without ordering up a round or 5 of margaritas? We went on Cinco De Mayo, when they were being sold at the ridiculous price of $1.50 per marg. I can't say they will always be so cheap, but I can say that they were really good, not too sweet with a pleasant tequila flavor coming through in each sip.<br />
<br />
Take a hint from the line of cars and people waiting to get inside the humble exterior, this place is a great find.<br />

<b>Toast</b>: to make bread crisp and brown by heat.<br />
<br />
What a great verb. After enjoying a meal here, it's easy to understand why this term was chosen to be the namesake and wall decoration for this truly authentic Italian sandwich shop. Toast takes the action of crisping and browning to another level, elevating it into an art form.<br />
<a name='more'></a>There's no better way to taste the toast than by ordering up one of their incredible panini sandwiches, grilled on rustic Italian bread.<br />
<br />
My personal favorites are the Tuscan Kale, Portobello fontina, and local farm egg salad. With each of these sandwiches, the satisfying crunch of crisped bread gives way to the gooey, warm middle layer of flavorful ingredients.<br />

<br />
Fayetteville Street was brimming with men, women, dogs, babies, strollers, a guy kicking fresh poetry freestyles in an all-white suit (food trucks are a powerful muse), all gathered together in order to bathe in the vast sea of food truck deliciousness.<br />

The weather couldn't have been more perfect for spending a few hours outside walking, eating and drinking, as the mass of people was evidence of how popular this event has become since its inception last year.<br />
<br />
With the help of funds from their recent successful Kickstarter campaign, a lot of the logistical costs / concerns of the Raleigh Rodeo were much improved from previous events, with increased seating and Port-a-Potty access naturally being top priorities.<br />
<br />
I used the rodeo as a chance to try out two trucks for the very first time: Barone Meatball Company and Belgian Waffology.<br />

What stood out immediately about Barone was their variety of ball options, including veggie and seafood. No matter what you were in the mood for, with this truck you could get it in ball form on a hoagie roll. Glorious.<br />

The two I sampled were the classic Mom's Italian Meatball (seasoned beef smothered with marinara) and the Crab Balls (crab cake-esque creations with remoulade).<br />
<br />
Mom's Italian is tomato-y and comforting to the tastebuds, a perfect example of what a meatball sub was meant to taste like.<br />

The Crab Balls are a drastic flavor contrast to the Italian, with a wonderful crab flavor that was spiced beautifully. The remoulade sauce pulled it all together, and made me swear I was eating somewhere with an ocean view.<br />

Belgian Waffology is a new-comer to the Triangle food truck game, but has been getting rave reviews from a lot of locals, so I had to check it out for myself. I wasn't the only one with this idea...<br />

The line was insanely long, but I was determined to enjoy a delicious waffle, so my time waiting was spent mostly studying the menu to figure out what to order and day dreaming about stuffing my face with waffles.<br />

I decided to go with the Liege waffle (which is made from a dough containing pearled sugar, making it denser and chewier than the traditional batter-based Brussels waffle) a la mode: topped with ice cream and fudge.<br />

Ice CreamI have a deep rooted attachment to ice cream.<br />
<br />
According to family legend, a few days before I was born my mom polished off an entire pint of Rocky Road without batting an eye. I like to think that thanks to this ravenous pregnant appetite, my infant body developed an undeniable physiological need for ice cream, as if chocolate covered peanuts and marshmallow swirl now course through my veins alongside plasma and white blood cells.<br />
<br />
I say all this to properly explain how excited I get at the prospect of eating ice cream, and how much MORE excited I get when I find a Triangle ice cream spot serving a quality product that's not only naturally made, but also locally sourced.<br />
<br />
FRESH in Raleigh has me practically giddy.<br />

<a name='more'></a>Based off their website, FRESH serves hormone and antibiotic free frozen treats, with cream sourced from local farmers in central NC. All of their ice cream is made on site (including FRESH-ly baked waffle cones) and their menu of flavors is quite impressive.<br />
<br />
In addition to the traditional scoop, they also offer ice cream cakes, sundaes, shakes and floats.<br />
<br />
The set up of FRESH puts me to mind of Cook-Out (another fantastic establishment for ice cream concoctions) because it's walk up service only. They do have tables and chairs set up near the ordering window, so you can hang around and enjoy your ice cream for a while in nice weather (an activity that should become America's new national pastime).<br />

<br />
With a massive list of hot sandwiches, daily/rotating specials and more homemade sides than you will know that to do with, Cafe Meridian is certainly not lacking in menu variety.<br />

<a name='more'></a>If I'm feeling like a sandwich to tame my lunchtime appetite, one of the best I've had here is the BLT+. Of their daily specials (these stay the same each day, not to be confused with the rotating specials), the Spanakopita is a home-run. A traditional Greek spinach pie, its wrapped up in crisp flaky phyllo dough and stuffed with three different cheeses. Served with two sides of your choice.<br />

I've been many times for a mid day break from the office, and can say I've never ordered anything I didn't enjoy.<br />

I went with the Crab Quesadilla, and was not disappointed. As you can see from the large hunks of crab meat peeking out from the griddled tortilla, they did not skimp on the crustacean portion.<br />
<br />
The farmers cheese melted within the quesadilla also added a unique flavor element that was different from the standard cheddar/mexican blend. Not pictured was a homemade salsa verde served on the side, providing a spicy yet pleasant kick.<br />

The Chocolate Chai cake doughnut is the front runner for my personal favorite. Soft and dense with a cakey crumb, it's lifted to the next level of doughnut excellence by the light glaze and hint of chai flavor. Pair this doughnut with a cup of locally roasted coffee and you'll be ready to single handily take the day by storm.<br />

<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #222222;"><span style="line-height: 16.1200008392334px;">If you're familiar with Scratch Baking in Durham, it's probably because of their awesome pies. <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #222222;"><span style="line-height: 16.1200008392334px;">But recently I discovered that Scratch is expanding their pie repertoire into the savory realm. I've had an eye on Scratch's Twitter feed for insights into how this magical pizza night works and learned these things:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>There is usually a tweet Wednesday afternoon previewing what the pizza choices will be for that night</li>
<li>An almost unfairly tempting post follows, with photo evidence of one of the pizza specials hot from the oven</li>
<li>Scratch makes the night BYOB. You can bring in a bottle of wine to share, or a beer to sip on free, of charge. No corkage or bottle fee. </li>
</ul>
<br />
Armed with this specific knowledge, I ventured down Orange Street with my sister, unopened beer in hand, ready to try out Scratch's take on pizza.<br />
<br />
The menu featured four speciality pies: one with just cheese, two meat options and one meat-free.<br />
<br />
We opted for the Polpette: a pie with red sauce, mozzarella cheese, pork meatballs, roasted green peppers, olives and provolone.<br />
<br />
This is really great pizza. The toppings combination was well thought out and executed, with meatballs, olives and cheese all working together in tasty harmony. The crust was crisp and featured some awesome air pockets (which my sister claimed for herself) and was slightly charred in spots, really elevating the flavor.<br />
<br />
Durham can claim its fair share of top notch pizza, and the pies from Scratch can be added to that list. The changing menu options, small bakery atmosphere and once a week frequency added an exciting feeling of exclusivity to the whole experience. Hopefully Scratch keeps the Wednesday pizza tradition alive, and other Trianglers can discover it for themselves.<br />
